The round of 16 for the Champions League is here, and there is only one Italian team left in the competition. Atalanta is the only team left, with Napoli, Inter Milan and Juventus all knocked out.(read who Atalanta will face here) This lack of Italian competition has shown a downward spiral in Italian football.

This has been an ongoing trend since the 2010s, with Serie A earning less TV Revenue than other top teams. For a while, top Italian teams failed to acknowledge this. Now however, they are finally acknowledging the change and looking for cheaper free agent signings.

Inter Milan with Beppe Marotta, lead the way in this measure. Marcus Thuram has been their most famous free agent signing, though he could leave Milan this summer. Then last summer the rest of Serie A joined in, Juventus signed Jonathan David, AC Milan signed Modric and Kevin De Bruyne joined Napoli.

Serie A teams will likely be back on the market for free agents once again this summer. Marcos Senesi has been linked to Juventus from Bournemouth. Juventus have also been linked to Zeki Celik along with Inter Milan as he will leave Roma this summer. Leon Goretzka could be another name to watch for Serie A teams this summer.

According to Matteo Moretto three Serie A teams have held meetings with Goretzka as a possible signing. Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan have all begun talks with Goretzka who will definitely leave Bayern. However, his wages could make a deal hard for a Serie A team

AS Roma have had the strongest defence this season in Serie A conceding only 16 goals in 26 games. This has been the biggest of changes that Gian Piero Gasperini has implemented in Rome. This has come why the attack has struggled this season, something unusual of a Gasperini team. Roma now sit fourth in the table despite having the best defence.

The Giallorossi didn’t make any large personal changes in defence, but have organised better. Roma will likely improve next summer with Gasperini asking the board to get rid of Evan Ndicka according to reports. If Ndicka leaves, Roma will need to upgrade in the position, however they still need the capital to do so.

Qualification to the Champions League this season would be a major boost for Roma, in that sense. But that qualification is not guaranteed yet with Juventus sitting only four points behind in fifth place. This comes as the two sides face off in Serie A’s premier Sunday night fixture this weekend. If Roma miss out on Champions League qualification they will be forced to make a sale in the summer.

Mile Svilar would likely be the name to leave as he has already received interest from Inter Milan. But, CalcioMercatoIT are now reporting that Paris Saint-Germain could also make a move to sign Svilar in the summer. PSG will likely be on the market for a goalkeeper Svilar is a realistic top quality name. A deal to sign Svilar could be done for around 60-65 million euros which Roma value him at.

If Roma do sell Svilar, they will need a replacement for next season. Currently, the leading name is Elia Caprile from Cagliari, a deal which could be completed for around 25 million euros. Caprile has been a standout so far in Serie A season which has seen him have six cleansheets in the league this season, and be linked to an Italian national team call up.

Guglielmo Vicario has consistently been Italy’s number two, behind Gianluigi Donnarumma. He has been one of many Italian internationals to play outside ot Italy, like Donnarumma. Donnarumma left AC Milan on a free transfer to play in France and now England.

Vicario however, never got his top chance at a top club like AC Milan. Tottenham decided to snap the Italian up from Empoli before he could move up the Italian table. This wasn’t due to lack of interest as Inter Milan aimed to sign Vicario back then. However, Tottenham beat them to complete a deal.

Inter look to right their previous wrongs this summer, as Yann Sommer could leave Milan. The Nerazzurri are now on the market for a replacement with Vicario being the leading name. Now according to CalcioMercatoIT, Inter are in constant contact with his agents, as they look to close a deal with Tottenham.

Vicario is valued at 25 million euros for any team to sign him. This is an easy fee for Inter Milan to meet, however they will have competition. This is according to La Stampa via RomaPress, as Roma could sign Vicaro to replace Mile Svilar. Svilar isn’t on the market by Roma, but if an offer comes in for 60-65 million euros they will accept.

Roma don’t want to be on the back foot if this happens, which is why they have begun their planning. No offical contacts have been made with Tottenham yet but they are evaluating Vicario. Another name to watch is Kostantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos who Roma could sign if they can’t get Vicario.
