Why Donyell Malen has been electric for AS Roma
AS Roma struggled for goals at the start of this season despite the hiring of Gian Piero Gasperini, someone known for his goalscoring. This was mainly due to his wrong personal as Gasperini didn’t like Artem Dovbyk or the new signing Evan Ferguson. However, Roma have finally solved these issue with a strong January mercato.
Robinio Vaz and Bryan Zaragoza were both bought in by Roma near the deadline. However, their best buy has been Donyell Malen who has come in from Aston Villa has been their best. Malen has played four games in his Roma career and has already bagged three goals.
Malen has adapted to Serie A well as he has been able to adapt to Italian football perfectly. Gasperini’s system has done wonders for Malen as his system has perfected the Dutch strikers needs. Roma playing with two attacking midfielders has allowed Malen the space he needs to attack.
Malen is a player that likes to get to the right side of the pitch. Especially in the box it is clear that he naturally drifts right for most of his chances. This has lead to Malen scoring most of his goals from the right side of the box as it is easier for him to get there.
Malen has been able to get into spaces also because of Roma’s attacking midfielders. This has lead to defenders having to sit up on the edge of Roma’s attack, meaning that defenders are usually on Malen’s back shoulder. This is something he likes as it allows him to attack the right side of the pitch with page from a through ball.
Donyell Malen has scored three of Roma’s four Serie A goals in their last four league games. They have also won both games he scored in, and the two where he didn’t score were a 1-1 draw to AC Milan and 1-0 loss against Udinese. Malen has had majority of Roma’s attacking output, proving that he can be a top striker not just a great player.
